CDL training through WIOA

Truck driving is one of the most common things people use WIOA for. Programs are short and many areas list it as in demand. Here is how to get a CDL course funded the right way.

The short answer

WIOA can pay for CDL training if you qualify for WIOA, your local area funds truck driving, and the school is on your state's eligible training provider list. Since February 7, 2022, first-time Class A or B CDL applicants must also train with a provider listed on the federal Training Provider Registry. Apply through your local American Job Center, not the school.

The federal training rule for first-time CDL drivers

Under the entry-level driver training rule, "an individual who applies, for the first time, for a Class A or Class B CDL, or who upgrades to a Class A or B CDL, must complete driver training from a provider listed on the Training Provider Registry" (49 CFR 380.609). The same applies to first-time passenger, school bus and hazardous materials endorsements. You can check any school on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

So a WIOA-funded CDL school needs to be on both lists: your state's eligible training provider list and the federal registry.

Check both lists: your state's WIOA provider list and FMCSA's Training Provider Registry.

How to get CDL training funded

  1. Check you can meet the job requirements

Commercial drivers need to pass a DOT medical exam, meet age rules (interstate driving generally requires age 21), and pass drug and alcohol testing. Your driving record matters. Check these before you apply, so WIOA funds a job you can actually get.

  2. Go to your American Job Center

Ask for WIOA training services and say you are interested in CDL. Find your center with the CareerOneStop locator.

  3. Find approved CDL programs

Search the WIOA-Eligible Training Program Finder for truck driving, then confirm each school on the Training Provider Registry.

  4. Compare schools

Look at cost, weeks of training, behind-the-wheel hours, the CDL class taught, job placement and whether the price includes the permit, the test and the truck for the road test.

  5. Get approved before you enroll

Wait for the job center to approve funding and set up the training account. Do not sign a separate payment agreement first.

Questions to ask the school

Veterans should also read WIOA for veterans; some states have separate programs for military drivers.

Common questions

Does WIOA pay for CDL school?

Often, yes. Truck driving is a commonly funded program. You must qualify for WIOA, your local area must fund truck driving, and the school must be on your state's eligible provider list and the federal Training Provider Registry.

Is WIOA CDL training really free?

If WIOA covers the full approved cost, you pay nothing for tuition. Some areas cap training accounts below the price of some schools, and extra costs like the DOT physical may or may not be covered. Ask for an all-in quote.

How long does WIOA CDL training take?

CDL programs are usually counted in weeks rather than months, but length varies by school and CDL class. Add time for WIOA eligibility, approval and the school's start dates.

Can I get WIOA CDL training with a bad driving record?

WIOA itself does not set driving record rules, but employers and insurers do. Many centers check that you can realistically be hired before funding CDL training, so be upfront about your record.
