Training

What can you train for with WIOA?

WIOA does not have a fixed menu. It pays for approved programs that lead to jobs in demand where you live. These are the fields people ask about most.

The short answer

WIOA can fund almost any occupational training that is on your state's eligible training provider list and leads to a job your local area considers in demand. Commonly funded fields include truck driving (CDL), nursing assistant and other healthcare, IT and cybersecurity, welding, HVAC and skilled trades, but the list in your area can be different.

The two tests every program must pass

  1. It is on the state list

WIOA training accounts can only pay programs on your state's eligible training provider list. Search it with the CareerOneStop WIOA-Eligible Training Program Finder.

  2. It leads to an in-demand job

Federal rules require training "directly linked to the employment opportunities in the local area or the planning region, or in another area to which the individuals are willing to commute or relocate" (20 CFR 680.210). Local boards decide which occupations they fund.

Other kinds of training WIOA can fund

Beyond classroom programs, WIOA can pay for on-the-job training, registered apprenticeship, customized training with an employer that commits to hire you, entrepreneurial training, and adult education or English classes combined with job training (20 CFR 680.200).

How to choose

Common questions

What is the most common WIOA training?

Commonly funded programs include truck driving (CDL), nursing assistant and other healthcare roles, IT certifications and skilled trades. The mix in your area depends on local demand.

Can WIOA pay for a bachelor's degree?

Some areas will pay toward degree programs on the provider list, but caps and length limits often mean WIOA covers only part. Short credential programs are funded more often.

Can I pick a field my area does not list as in demand?

Only if it is in demand in an area where you are willing to commute or relocate. Otherwise WIOA training funds usually cannot be used for it.
